Student Built Homes

Career Center House Project

Decades ago, HBA of Billings members decided it was time to invest in the building industry's future.  That is when the Career Center House Project was created in conjunction with School District #2.  The idea was to give students hands-on training in building homes.  With the help of the HBA, 32 homes have been built over the past 32 years, with more to come!  This program has been nationally recognized and has also become a prototype for other private-public partnerships across the country.

College of Technology House Project

This program could be called the next stage of home building outside the confines of a classroom.  Montana State University-Billings College of Technology is partnering with the HBA to help future builders take their skills to the next level by building a home.  This program offers additional hands-on experience that will help propel these students into a building and construction career.

Green Building Courses

Montana Green Build Program

Green Building Initiative: Green Building Training

MBIA, in conjunction with NAHB's Green Building Initiative (GBI) have set up a training page for the Montana Green Building Program. The site contains over sixty videos with over thirty hours demonstrating Green Building Best Practices based on the NAHB Green Building Guidelines. It also has a Learning management System (LMS) that allow each user to follow his or her own progress. This is a great addition to existing member benefits, and a great opportunity to help each local energize their green build programs.

The website address is: www.greenbuildertraining.org/mt

Once a user enters the site, all they need to do is click on “register for an account” and enter the registration code GREENMT.

National Green Building Certification Program

The Home Builders Association of Billings has recently become a partner of the National Green Building Program administered by the NAHB Research Center. As a partner the Home Builders Association of Billings will promote and education the industry and the community about the benefits of green building and will promote the National Green Building Standards (the only green building program approved by the American National Standards Institute).

Lead Paint Renovation, Repair & Painting Certification Courses
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule governing the work of professional remodelers in homes where there is lead-based paint will take effect in April 2010.

NEW...Lead Paint Rule Enforcement Delayed Until September 30, 2010

The rule addresses remodeling and renovation projects disturbing more than six square feet of potentially contaminated painted surfaces for all residential and multifamily structures built prior to 1978 that are inhabited or frequented by pregnant women and children under the age of six.

Training and Certification
Beginning in April 2010, firms working in pre-1978 homes will need to be certified. Along with the firm certification, an employee will also need to be certified as a Certified Renovator. This employee will be responsible for training other employees and overseeing work practices and cleaning. The training curriculum is an eight-hour class with two hours of hands-on training. Both the firm and Certified Renovator certifications are valid for five years. A Certified Renovator must take a four-hour refresher course to be recertified.
